Karamat Qayum, Esq.

Mr. Karamat Qayum is dedicated to representing the immigrant community and uses his background as an immigrant himself to help others achieve their dream of permanent residency in America. Additionally, his experience in litigation has given him the knowledge and wherewithal to deal with any legal problem an immigrant may experience in Miami, Florida.

Born in Medellín, Colombia, Mr. Qayum arrived in the United States when he was ten years old. He even spent time being undocumented in the United States. He is fluent in English and Spanish and is well equipped to not only understand the concerns and difficulties of those with immigration problems but can help resolve them in the best way possible.

Mr. Qayum graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Florida International University. While obtaining his undergraduate degree, he interned with the MiamiDade State Attorney’s Office, where he gained invaluable knowledge of the criminal justice system. He is also a proud alumnus of Florida International University’s College of Law.

During law school, he participated in the Immigrant Children’s Justice Clinic, where he represented immigrant children facing removal from the country. He also participated in the Community Development Clinic, where he provided legal counsel and transactional services to small businesses and non-profit organizations. This vast experience with the United States justice equipped him with the knowledge of how that system works, allowing him to best guide his clients through their cases, avoiding pitfalls that might not be obvious to those less experienced.

Mr. Qayum served as a judicial intern for the Honorable Judge Stacy D. Glick. Also, he was a law clerk with the United States Department of Justice Executive Office for Immigration Review, where he advised and drafted legal decisions for immigration judges on issues involving removal cases. He later worked for a prestigious immigration firm in Coral Gables before opening the doors of Garcia & Qayum Law Group, P.A.

Mr. Qayum is a past president of the Colombian American Bar Association. He is also a board member of the Miami-Dade Hispanic Affairs Advisory Board, where he advises county commissioners on the needs of the Hispanic community living in Miami-Dade County. Recently, Mr. Qayum was selected to Super Lawyers 2019 Florida Rising Start list, an honor reserved for those lawyers who exhibit excellence in practice. Only 2.5% of attorneys in Florida receive this distinction.
